CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 9, 2018) – Mercy Medical Center has acquired three new da Vinci® Surgical Systems, further advancing the technology available to Mercy surgery patients and replacing some large-incision surgeries with a minimally invasive approach.
Mercy’s new arsenal of surgical tools includes two new da Vinci X models as well as an Xi model. The X model systems, the newest offered by Intuitive Surgical, Inc., are a first for Cedar Rapids. The system enables surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations through a few small incisions and consists of several key components, including: an ergonomically designed console where the surgeon sits while operating; a patient-side cart where the patient is positioned during surgery; interactive robotic arms; a 3D HD vision system; and wristed instruments.
The Xi model allows surgeons to tilt or adjust the operation table to accommodate the shifting of patients’ organs during surgery, giving surgeons access to hard-to-reach places, such as with colorectal surgery. It can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Mercy will soon offer the technology for large ventral hernias, bariatric and thoracic procedures. Current applications include options for colorectal, urological, oncologic, hernia and gynecologic surgeries.

Other benefits for patients may include: fewer complications, less scarring and a shorter hospital stay.
Mercy began utilizing the new daVinci systems in May.
