Family Caregivers Center of Mercy’s “Together in Song” Chorus

May 13, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Family Caregivers Center of Mercy is pleased to announce a special presentation of the Together in Song chorus at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 13.  The concert takes place in the Hallagan Education Center at Mercy Medical Center, 701 10th St. SE, Cedar Rapids.

The Together in Song chorus consists of people living with dementia and other chronic conditions; their care partners or spouses; and volunteers. The goal of this musical initiative is to spark memories through song and create meaningful connections.

Chorus conductor, Steve Nurre, points to a growing body of research that demonstrates the positive effects of singing for people who are battling dementia. He says people who struggle with remembering names or dates can often recall song lyrics from their past.

The theme of the concert is Broadway Review, featuring familiar show tunes from more than 20 favorite Broadway musicals.  The choral presentation is narrated by Mercy Medical Center president and CEO, Tim Charles. A string bass player and drummer will accompany the chorus.

Nurre’s wife, Mary, serves as accompanist for the chorus.

The concert is free and open to all.  Guests are invited to stay for cookies and coffee after the concert.
