Some Things Just Call for A Little Higher Consultation

Spiritual Services in the MedQuarter

Holistic care goes beyond your physical healthcare needs. It includes your emotional, social and spiritual needs too. Your spirit is just as important to your health as your body.

Some people experience spirituality through religion. Some through music and the arts. And still more experience spirituality through connection with nature. Between pocket parks, studios, historic sites and faith-based organizations, you can find a place to connect with your spiritual side in the MedQuarter however you prefer. If you prefer a church or chapel, you might want to start your search here.

The Mercy Medical Center Pastoral Care Staff is made up of clinically trained, professional chaplains. As an institution with a faith-inspired mission, Mercy Medical Center understands the important role faith and spirituality can play in alleviating stress and promoting health and healing. The Pastoral Care team ministers to individuals from any faith or spiritual background, respecting and affirming all beliefs.

Chaplains are present in the hospital from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. During those hours, a chaplain can be reached directly by dialing (319) 398-6112. Chaplains are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to patients, their families and to Mercy staff. After hours, the chaplain can be reached by contacting the Mercy House Supervisor at (319) 398-6145.

The Pastoral Care office is located on the first floor behind the information desk at the 10th Street main entrance. The Pastoral Care office can be contacted by (319) 398-6106.

Our Lady of Mercy Chapel is located on the first floor next to the 10th Street entrance and is open to people of all faiths for prayer or reflection. Catholic Mass is celebrated in the Mercy Chapel Monday through Thursday at 11:15 a.m. and can be viewed on channel 5 in patient rooms. Holy Communion is distributed daily to Catholic patients’ rooms. The Anointing of the Sick and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are provided and can be requested by asking Mercy staff or contacting Pastoral Care at (319) 398-6106.

St. Luke’s Spiritual Care is comprised of board certified chaplains, associate chaplains and spiritual care volunteers. We are available 24/7 to support patients and families with spiritual needs. We are also there to support St. Luke’s staff. Chaplains respond to traumas, medical emergencies, deaths and requested consults.

During business hours, a chaplain can be contacted directly from within the hospital by dialing 7347 or outside the hospital at (319) 369-7347. After hours and on weekends, a chaplain can be reached by dialing 7211 or (319) 369-7211 and asking for the chaplain on-call. Patients may also notify a nurse of their desire to speak with a chaplain.

The Vyrl and Martha Justice Chapel is located on the first floor near the A Avenue entrance. It is open 24 hours a day and is available to visitors of all faiths for prayer, meditation and nurture of the human spirit. An ecumenical service is held in the chapel each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome. The service is also broadcast live on channel 8 for those who would like to participate from their rooms. In addition, mid-day prayer services are offered in the chapel each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12:15 p.m.
